Latin America is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an earth rights defender.
Defenders in Latin America who speak out against destructive projects and human rights violations risk their lives to protect their families, communities, and the environment.
Our training, legal, and campaigns programs shift power from global elites to local communities and earth rights defenders. We help raise their voices as they fight for climate justice and corporate accountability.
We support those on the frontlines in Latin America who risk their lives to safeguard the health of our environment, advance human rights, and challenge corporate interests.
THE MOST BIODIVERSE PLACE IN THE WORLD
The Amazon is home to approximately 30 million people and more than 350 Indigenous groups. But, extractive companies and other large corporations pose a significant threat to the region. Communities pay the costs of corporate abuse, with Indigenous communities suffering the greatest consequences for large-scale development projects.
SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES IN THE AMAZON
We are committed to training the next generation of earth rights defenders. We host legal seminars in Peru to teach lawyers and advocates from the region about legal strategies to defend the rights of their communities. Learn more about Seminario here.
Since the early 1990s, the U’wa have consistently fought to protect their sacred land against extractive projects and oil and gas companies, including Occidental Petroleum and Ecopetrol. In 2020, EarthRights teamed up with the U’Wa to take their case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Learn more.
We reported on the contracts signed between the police and mining and oil companies in Peru. The contracts are meant to protect the economic interests of the extractive companies, putting them first before the rights of the Peruvian people. These agreements contradict the actual purpose of a national police force. Learn more.
