A network of Civil Society Organizations released a statement urging the National League for Democracy (NLD) government to completely abandon plans for coal and big hydro projects in Myanmar.
In total, 422 organizations representing Myanmar’s diverse ethnic communities, as well as national and international NGOs endorsed the statement.
It was launched after a two-day Green Energy Forum in Yangon this month, which brought together campaigners from across Myanmar, co-organized by EarthRights International, Heinrich Boll Stiftung, PaungKu, Renewable Energy Association Myanmar and Karen Rivers Watch.
The undersigned organizations demand that local communities, including indigenous populations and women, should be at the forefront of Myanmar energy policy, instead of big business and international financial institutions.
The statement is available to download in English and Burmese.
