A U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday about whether a suit can proceed against the Unocal corporation for alleged human rights abuses in Burma. The Burmese plaintiffs are suing under the Alien Tort Claims Act — a law that allows non-Americans to sue American companies or individuals for alleged human rights abuses committed anywhere in the world.
