Oo Kyaw Thein

Oo Kyaw Thein is a Yangon, Myanmar based Advocate. He earned his LL.B from the University of Dagon, Yangon and received a diploma in International Relations from Rangoon University and a diploma in Political Management from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Yangon. He has also studied political science, rule of law, human rights, conflict resolution and peace research through the University of Oslo, Norway and the American Center, Yangon.
He began work as a Higher Grade Pleader in 2008 in Rakhine State, where his work focused on criminal defense and land related cases. In 2014, he was recognized as an Advocate by the Supreme Court of the Union of Myanmar and has since focused on providing legal assistance to the unjustly accused. As a Bertha Legal Fellow with ERI, Oo Kyaw Thein worked with the Myanmar legal team to pioneer the use of environmental law and innovative legal strategies to protect and promote environmental justice and human rights. Oo Kyaw Thein was recently named Legal Advisor. He is fluent in his native Arakanese, as well as Burmese and English.
