Tessa de Ryck, Earth Rights Defenders Coordinator

“Why I bike? Cycling is great for body and mind! Nothing beats a morning bike ride along rice paddies listening to podcasts. Returning home from work on a bicycle is also a great way to unwind from a day’s work. Especially as I don’t have time to do a lot of exercise, cycling to work has really improved my quality of life.”

Brendon Thomas, EarthRights School Teacher

“I strongly believe that the bicycle is one of the greatest inventions of all time. When we learn to cycle, the terrifying thrill of discovering that we can balance to ride – wobbling and frightened at first, but soon faster and more daring – gives us our first real taste of freedom and independence. The bicycle has even spanned several technological revolutions and persisted where so many technologies have been overtaken. The twice-daily spirit-lifting ride to work helps me stay fit and healthy and, more importantly, keeps me sane and happy.”

Ali Borochoff-Porte, Bertha Legal Fellow

“Why not bike to work? It’s cheaper and more sustainable. Plus, I like to pay due respect to the bike as an agent of change. Cycling promotes increased mobility, and assisted in the late 19th century feminist pushback against restrictive dress and concepts of femininity. I’m just grateful that I don’t have to traverse to work delicately, in a hoop skirt (unless I want to).”

Bertha Legal Fellow Ali Borochoff-Porte bikes to work every day. Wyatt Gjullin, another Berta Legal Fellow, also bikes to work.

Kirk Herbertson, Advocacy Strategist

“I first started biking to work about 10 years ago and am happy to have seen the city evolve into a bike-friendly place. It’s a great way to spend a little time outside each day.”

Marco Simons, Americas Regional Program Director and General Counsel

“I’ve biked to a metro station for years, but I’d never biked all the way to our office – about seven miles – until I decided to try it for Bike to Work Day last year. It was surprisingly easy and faster than my regular commute, replacing an hour of sitting on the train each day with an hour of exercise.”

Marco Simons, General Counsel, bikes to work — rain or shine!

Skylar Lindsay, Southeast Asia Communications Coordinator

“I cycle to work because I’d like to live in a city where everyone bikes – it’s the most popular form of transport in the world besides walking. My dad biked to work for over 30 years in rainy, hilly Seattle so it’s always seemed normal to me. It’s just more fun than being stuck in a car or on a bus.”
