Prior to working at EarthRights, Maya was an Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, where she provided legal representation to immigrants impacted by the criminal injustice system. Maya was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Growing up in a country at the frontlines of the climate crisis led Maya to become involved with climate justice organizing as a young person. Before law school Maya worked at the Human Rights Law Network in India, where she focused on reproductive rights and transnational litigation against pesticide companies. She then returned to Kenya to work with indigenous communities opposing the extractive industry. Maya graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Brown University and a J.D. from NYU Law. She is admitted to practice law in New York.
