EarthRights International’s work in the U.S. combines two complementary approaches:

Groundbreaking Transnational Litigation

Domestic Advocacy

Our transnational litigation has achieved landmark victories, including a Supreme Court ruling that ended absolute immunity for international finance institutions, the first U.S. jury verdict holding an American corporation liable for overseas human rights violations, and historic settlements benefitting frontline communities worldwide. As the operating environment evolves, we continue to grow this work and contribute to the legal architecture for corporate accountability.

Our growing domestic and community-centered litigation supports communities within the U.S. to pursue legal and campaigning strategies that best serve their goals, then scale lessons learned to shape policy and inform the efforts of other communities across the country for broader impact. These approaches draw on EarthRights’ decades of expertise supporting communities around the world to challenge corporate and governmental abuses to build resilience and protect land, resources, and human rights.

Our coordinating and leadership role in the Protect the Protest task force allows us to build and maintain a platform for organizations to share defense strategies and build solidarity for responding to tactics used against advocates, including strategic lawsuits against public participation or SLAPPs. By fostering collaboration among organizations with diverse priorities, geographies, and approaches to change, this initiative bridges movement silos, ensuring a unified and agile response to emerging threats, and reinforcing democracy and civic space in the face of growing institutional rollbacks.
