When the Peruvian government refused to make public agreements between the national police and Peruvian mining companies, ERI, together with three Peruvian organizations, requested access from the Minister of the Interior in early November. There has been no response from the Ministry, despite that, legally, a response to such a request may not exceed 12 business days.
Despite the lack of response from the government, an article was published this week in one of Peru’s most prominent publications, La Republica, indicating that the Ministry of the Interior will indeed make these agreements public. This is good news and we will continue to watch for the events to unfold.
The agreements between the national police and the mining companies are an expression of the privatization of public order which leads to serious human rights violations. We will continue to urge the authorities to make the public aware of the agreements.
