Mala Kyun and Gone Chwein villages, Kyak Phyu Township, Rakhine (Arakan) State. Land Confiscation Without Compensation. Official letter from Myanmar Army Infantry Battalion (IB) 34, Captain Zaw Myint Htoo, to Kyauk Phyu Township Peace and Development Council, January 2011. This letter informs the Local Development Council in Gone Chwein village that three land parcels are confiscated for a shooting range for IB 34. Copies were distributed to the three landowners. This land was later sold in 2011 to the Myanmar Golden Crown Company (MGC) to establish the cement factory (pictured) in support of the Shwe natural gas project. No compensation has been paid to land title holders whose rice paddy and pasture was confiscated. Daewoo International responded in November 2012 that this issue is limited to a problem between the Army and the local landowners and denies that the land has ever been acquired or used by MGC. Local community members dispute Daewoo International’s claims.
